Chuck, Put a guage in the reverser control valve. under left side floor board The 1/8 th pipe plug that is straight up is the main pressure tap.
It's located near where the 2 pieces of control valve bolt together. The one on an angle is the lube oil pres. You should have approx. At medium engine speed with gearbox in neutral. If no oil pres. Either reverser is in need of rebuild, or isolator plate springs gave out on flywheel I hate to see someone throw money away on an expensive repair on a piece that old.
I'm going to take flack on this statement, but here goes. The 1010 -2010 series tractors were not a real efficient machine. See,I knew someone would take offense aready. But the truth hurts. When I worked for a Deere dealer back in the early 70's, I was talking to an old salesman that sold these machines.

He told me that Deere cancelled orders for that series and instead supplied the 350-450 machines as replacements. Then he said Deere scrapped any remaining assembled units back into parts or assemblies for sale as repair pieces. Could be anything from isolator to final drives.Where should we start. Well known failures include coupler between reverser and transmission. These strip out from rust causing splines to wear out. Reverser countershaft, I've seen this shaft break in a 350 dozer. It made gangs of noise when it failed. Oil pressure loss in reverser from pump or sealing ring failure.

Gonna do the reverser work yourself? If not, It's not worth putting so much money into a 1010. In a Deere shop it will cost several thousands to fix.

If the reverser shaft broke, he would have heard it, maybe even seen it. Try some simple things first like checking out the control valve linkage and valve pressures, assuming it is a reverser crawler. Perhaps it could be something as simple as the control lever being stuck in neutral or low oil in the reverser. Hopefully that is all it is, if not, could turn into a big project. The reverser section of the service manual takes up about 1/3 of a 1' and a little bit thick book.
John Deere 1010 Crawler For Sale
Getting the reverser out to work on it is a big job, but not impossible, so pay accordingly. If the seller won't reduce price because it is a 'simple fix', beware, if it was simple he woulda done it.
